The expression “give the devil his due” means
to give deserved credit to a disagreeable or malevolent person.
In that sense, there is only one good thing to be said about the devil:
his existence further proves the truth of God and the Bible.
Before I became a Christian, I did not believe the devil was real, and, if I gave it any thought at all,
I regarded those who did as superstitious. But gradually,
after I became a Christian, my opinion changed, and I joined those backward thinkers.
Belief in the devil is not a requirement of Christianity. Instead, the Bible says:
| Act 16:31 : ... Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved ... |
But once you begin to believe the words of the Bible, belief in the devil is a natural progression. In fact, you move from the “natural” to the “spiritual” in your discernment:
| 1Co 2:14 : ... the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. |
Once you have spiritual discernment, you can “see” the devil (or, more accurately, you can perceive the work and influence of fallen angels). It is not as if I see the devil everywhere in a fearful way. In fact, I'm more apt to say I see God everywhere, not the devil. But I can see the tell-tale evidences of evil spirits.
Here is one example. Look some evening at the television line-up on such varied channels as the Sci-Fi Channel, the History Channel, the Travel Channel, and the Discovery Channel. You'll see programs on ghosts, UFO's, the paranormal, and communicating with the dead. Although they are clearly reflections of what viewers want to watch, they are also literal evidences of the devil, his claw visible just below the curtain edge.
The devil reveals himself with his lies. And, in a way that he does not intend, his existence provides conclusive evidence of the truth of God and the Bible.
